Dental Implants

Permanent solution for missing teeth

What is are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth and also provide a fixed solution to having removable partial or complete dentures.  Implants provide excellent support and stability for these dental appliances.

Dental implants are artificial roots and teeth (usually titanium) that are surgically placed into the upper or lower jaw bone by a dentist or Periodontist - a specialist of the gums and supporting bone.  The teeth attached to implants are very natural looking and often enhance or restore a patient’s smile!

Dental implants are very strong, stable, and durable and will last many years, but on occasion, they will have to be re-tightened or replaced due to normal wear.

Reasons for dental implants:

  • Replace one or more missing teeth without affecting adjacent teeth.

  • Resolve joint pain or bite problems caused by teeth shifting into missing tooth space.

  • Restore a patient’s confident smile.

  • Restore chewing, speech, and digestion.

  • Restore or enhance facial tissues.

  • Support a bridge or denture, making them more secure and comfortable.

What does getting dental implants involve?

The process of getting implants requires a number of visits over several months.

X-rays and impressions (molds) are taken of the jaw and teeth to determine bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant.  While the area is numb, the implant will be surgically placed into the bone and allowed to heal and integrate itself onto the bone for up to six months.  Depending on the type of implant, a second surgery may be required in order to place the “post” that will hold the artificial tooth in place.  With other implants the post and anchor are already attached and placed at the same time.

After several weeks of healing the artificial teeth are made and fitted to the post portion of the anchor.  Because several fittings may be required, this step may take one to two months to complete.  After a healing period, the artificial teeth are securely attached to the implant, providing excellent stability and comfort to the patient.

You will receive care instructions when your treatment is completed.  Good oral hygiene, eating habits, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new implant.

Can an implant be done in one day?

One-day, or same-day, implants may seem too good to be true, but they can actually be fitted in a single day and spare you from the laborious traditional implant procedure. By doing this, you will be able to avoid the drawn-out osseointegration and wound-healing procedures, the need for uncomfortable dentures, as well as the several months of waiting in between. When compared to other medical implant devices, whether for a single tooth or an entire arch, implants generally have unmatched success rates.

Although you will still need an early consultation, lots of planning to determine the suitability, and a follow-up appointment, the implant process itself will just require one visit. One-day implants also have the benefit of a stronger implant-to-bone fusion. Gums and soft tissues recover more quickly, and they are less likely to regress. The implants prevent pollutants from entering the tooth extraction socket, speeding up the healing process.

What is a single implant?

As the name suggests this is the placement of a single fake tooth, commonly referred to as a "crown", which happens in three stages. First, the gap left by the patient's missing tooth is used to secure a titanium rod into the jaw. This will be an artificial "root" to hold the tooth in place.

The titanium rod is then fitted with a little device that serves as a "saddle" for a custom-made crown that complements the rest of the patient's teeth.

The entire missing tooth, from root to crown, is replaced by a single dental implant without sacrificing the health or structure of neighboring teeth. The ability of a patient to speak or eat is unaffected by crowns, which are normally composed of porcelain or ceramic and look and feel natural.

How long does a single tooth implant last?

The implant screw itself can last a lifetime with good oral hygiene and care, provided the patient sees a dentist regularly every six months. The crown typically only lasts 10 to 15 years before needing to be replaced because of wear and tear. However, maintaining good oral care and using it sparingly can extend the life of the crown beyond 15 years.

The position of the teeth in the mouth also affects how long a dental implant will last. Because implants in the back of the mouth are used more intensively in chewing, they will likely wear out faster than implants in the front of the mouth.

Can you get an implant on the same day as an extraction?

The interval between having a tooth extracted and replaced will vary depending on a number of factors.

If you have healthy gums and sufficient jawbone density, you may be a candidate for "immediate dental implant placement," which involves placing an implant shortly after extraction. Also, whether an instant dental implant may be placed depends on your dentist's skill and expertise in removing the damaged tooth.

After the tooth is extracted, your dentist can put the titanium post into your jaw right away, in the same appointment. Following that, it gradually merges with the bone to offer a solid foundation for a dental crown.
